This film revolves around Calcutta Mail and is the story of Avinash (Anil Kapoor) who arrives in the city of chaos in a train named Calcutta Mail. Avinash had great curiosity in his heart while coming to Calcutta but very soon, he realizes that things are not as fine as they seemed. He understands that someone is after him, keeping constant vigil on his every move. And unfortunately, he doesn't know who it is.

Avinash lives in a tenement where several other interesting and mysterious characters are around him. Avinash is an absolutely ordinary man who has no super-hero things in him. He comes to Calcutta in search of something. He happens to come across few others while strolling in the streets of the city. Important among these characters are Rima (Rani Mukherjee), a novelist, Sujan Singh (Satish Kaushik), a politician, Ghatak (Saurabh Shukla), inspector Rastogi (Sayaji Shinde) and others. Interestingly, Rima is heading a life that has double identities and Avinash is amused, maybe worried as well, about who this girl actually is.

Calcutta mail is a different kind of thriller. And one can trust Mishra who has given some critically acclaimed films like Dharavi, Ye Woh Manzil To Nahin and Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin. Calcutta Mail was launched almost four years after IRKSN (1996) and has taken more time than expected for completion. Anil Kapoor is known for signing films that has substance as he has films like Ishwar to his credit and so, it will be really interesting to see him in a film by Mishra who is considered among few best writers of the industry. Rani Mukherjee will be seen in a different film for the second time after Hey Ram while Manisha Koirala, who plays an important role, will be seen in an arty film, probably for the first time. Though Ek Chhoti Si Love Story was not a mainstream film, it was never considered as a good cinema. Satya fame Snehal Dabhi who played Chander in that movie also stars in this film.

Calcutta Mail has cinematography by Ravi Chandran, dialogues by Saurabh Shukla and screenplay by Mishra, Shukla and Ruchi Narayan. While IRKSN was a movie that focused on the nightlife of Mumbai, Mishra's latest venture will let audience have a peek into the lifestyle of Calcutta. The film has just two-and-a-half songs even though the music company wanted to have more than half a dozen numbers in it.
