Synopsis Dilip (Shashi Kapoor) is a young man who grows up with some very fanatical ideas about religion and identity. But, buried in his past are some shocking facts about his true parentage. He is really the illegitimate son born to Muslim parents. A sympathetic Hindu couple adopted him when his father left his mother after a brief affair. Now, during the tumultuous days of the Partition of India, when the fires of communal hatred are raging through the country, Dilip has become a weapon of destruction – he goes to the house of a Muslim couple, ready to kill them, without knowing their real identity.

This film is based on a novel by the great freedom fighter, Acharya Vinoba Bhave and it won the National Award for the Best Feature Film. This was Shashi Kapoor’s first movie as an adult actor and has a brief special appearance from Rajendra Kumar. It is also Yash Chopra’s second film as a director.
