Anita Varma the niece of Sita Devi, a prominent social worker and an enthusiastic fighter for women's right who is striving for the passing of the Divorce Bill, is brought up in the tradition of the upper classes with the accent on western ideas and the western mode of living. Despite Sita Devi's constant efforts make Anita hate men, Anita is secretly infatuated with Ramesh, the tennis champion. On her twenty first birthday her father's will is opened by the lawyer and the aunt is shocked to learn that the seventy lakhs which he was left behind for his daughter are to be hers only if she is married and if not that she should be married within one month of the opening of the will failing which all the money is to be distributed in charities! The infuriated aunt realizes that her brother has done this to foil her own plans for Anita (of a life which men have no place!) and is determined to find a way out.Anita meets Ramesh and tells him of the will and suggests that they get married immediately! Ramesh brushes her away for he looks upon her as one of his many pestering fans, and besides, he is to go to England to play at the Wimbledon. Meanwhile Sita Devi contacts Preetam, a young unemployed cartoonist, through an editor friend of hers, and has a strange deal with. He is to marry Anita under three conditions, one that he will not meet her ever after marriage, two, that he will grant her divorce whenever wanted, and three, that he will keep it a secret for which he is to receive a remuneration of Rs. 250/- every month. Preetam who has met Anita before agrees to the proposition on seeing the large photograph of Anita in the hall, which the aunt confirms is the girl he is to marry.Anita now disappointed by Ramesh who has slipped away to England is also not very happy about this man who is going to marry her for money, but Sita Devi convinces her that she should look upon the arrangement as a means of getting her inheritance and nothing more. But Anita is shocked to find Preetam in the registrar's office awaiting to get married to her, for she has met him before and had been begun to take a liking for him. Reluctantly she allows herself to be married. Preetam concludes that there is no point in his trying to make up with Anita when she has no feelings for him. He has himself photographed in an outrageous manner with a girl on either side of him which he hands over to Anita's aunt, along will all the cheques they had given him, in order to facilitate them in securing divorce. Anita sees the photograph which her aunt lies has been given to her by one of the girls who have been victims to the guiles of Preetam, and breaks down. The petition for divorce is brought to court. Does Sita Devi secure the divorce for her niece? Do the lovers, tied by the sacred bonds of marriage, reunite? These and other questions will be answered for you on the screen.
